¿Qué largo debe tener un palillo para el pelo? Tabla por largo de cabello

Hair sticks are sold by length, but the length that works has nothing to do with how long your hair is. It depends on how big your bun is. Here is how to size one, with the numbers.

The pencil test

Twist your hair into the bun you actually wear. Push a pencil through it from the side. Pull it out and look at the part that was hidden in the hair. Add 1 to 1.5 inches (2 to 4 cm) on each side so the stick can anchor at the scalp and still show its top. That total is your stick length.

Hair stick size chart

Hair Stick length Thickness
Fine, or shoulder length 4.5 to 5 in (115 to 130 mm) 4 to 4.5 mm, light
Medium, mid-back 5 to 6 in (130 to 155 mm) 5 mm
Thick or waist length 6 to 7 in (155 to 180 mm), or two sticks 5.5 to 6 mm, heavier

Most brands cluster their sizes here for a reason: 4.5 inches is the small, 5 to 5.5 inches is the classic, 6 inches and up is the long. If you are between sizes, go longer. A stick that is a little long still holds; one that is short never reaches the scalp.

Thickness and weight

A stick 5 mm thick or more holds dense hair. Fine hair wants 3 to 4.5 mm and as little weight as possible, because a heavy stick needs a lot of hair to stay put. A metal stick around 10 grams sits well in fine to medium hair; 20 grams and up is for thick hair or a pair.

Point and finish

The tip should be pointed enough to slide through the twist and rounded enough that it never scratches. A satin or brushed shaft grips hair; a mirror-polished one slips, especially in fine or freshly washed hair.

Straight or curved?

Preference. Some people find a curved stick pulls the bun tighter; others feel no difference. Straight is the classic, and it is what we make.

Stick, pin or fork?

A stick goes in from the side of a twisted bun and works on medium to long hair. A French hair pin goes straight down through a twist and is the fastest for a chignon. A three-prong hair fork is the answer for very thick or curly hair. The full numbers for all three are in the size guide.
