What thick hair needs from a pin
Surface area, not spring. A pin holds thick hair when the twist is tight and the pin has enough length and enough prongs to pass all the way through the twist and anchor at the scalp. Short pins and two-prong hair sticks slide out by lunch. Look for prongs at least 4 inches long, three of them for very thick hair, and material stiff enough not to flex: solid metal or thick acetate.

What to skip
Thin metal U-pins that bend, hair sticks with one prong, and anything under 3.5 inches. Claw clips over 4 inches hold thick hair but crease it and snap; they are fine for wet hair and nothing else.
How to make any of them hold
Twist tighter than feels natural, anchor at the scalp, and do the flip. Nine times out of ten a pin that slides out was pushed straight in without the flip.
