The quiet one. A slim, geometric metal U pin with nothing to distract from the twist.

Twist, tuck, slide the pin down through the bun — done. Wear it alone or two for extra hold.

Which pin for my hair?

Fine or thin hair: a slim 4 in (10 cm) metal pin (French Hair Pin, Minimal) grips best; twist tighter and slide the pin in flatter to the scalp.

Medium to thick hair: a longer pin (4.5 to 5.5 in), two pins, or the wider acetate forks (Tortoise Fork, French Hair Fork, Riviera) that hold more hair without bending.

Curly or textured hair: twist loosely so the pin can catch the hair against the scalp; a fork tends to be easier than a slim pin.

Length: made for hair long enough to twist, roughly shoulder length (12 in) and up.

Numbers for every pin, fork and stick: the size guide.

FAQ

How long does it take? Twist, fold, pin. Most people are at about ten seconds after a few tries. The Journal has three twists that hold.

Will it hurt or snag? The pin is smooth polished metal or acetate with no teeth, hinge or elastic, so there is nothing to catch on hair.

Does it stay in? When the pin passes through the twist and catches hair against the scalp, it holds. If it slides, twist tighter and angle the pin flatter.

What if it is not for me? 30-day returns on unused pins, and free replacement or refund with a photo within 14 days if anything arrives damaged or wrong.

How it works

Up in about ten seconds

  1. 1

    Twist

Gather hair at the nape and twist it upward into a loose rope.

  2. 2

    Fold

Fold the twist up against your head so the ends tuck in.

  3. 3

    Pin

Push the pin down through the fold, catching hair against the scalp. Flip it and slide it in.
